About Me

Alan G Young

I began teaching music 30 years ago. I originally taught guitar, and then expanding into teaching both piano and guitar. I am also an experienced songwriter, music arranger, singer and performer.

I first learnt the piano as a child. During this period, I studied under the Royal Schools of Music exam system (ABRSM) for both performance and theory. After leaving school, I attended university for 2 years, studying music. I then developed my ability to play piano by ear and began to compose contemporary songs on the piano. I also joined the band Medusa, which performed many of my original compositions and went on to win the Wellington battle of the bands. We were awarded recording time and radio and television coverage and began touring New Zealand.

I then went on to performing for many years as a solo singer/guitarist. I also worked for 9 years with Tongue & Groove, Auckland’s premier function Band. During these years I performed for numerous corporate clients and celebrities such as TVNZ, Fletcher Challenge, Coca-Cola, The Auckland Blues and The Radio Awards.

I’ve been composing since the age of 17 and have over written 300 songs, in a side variety of genres, including instrumental pieces on guitar and piano. Some of my music is available on iTunes.

In the year 2000, I formed Impact Soundtracks, a production company for jingles and soundtracks in the field of media advertising. I’ve composed over 100 pieces of music for various companies, and I have collaborate with award winning and internationally recognised composers in the United States. Well know examples of jingles I’ve created are St Pierre’s Sushi and Ven-Lu-Ree Blind Services.

Now I'm teaching full time, which I've been doing for most of the past 15 years.
